Nutrient Blend

Each purchase removes CO₂ from the air

An all purpose mix of vermicompost, organic nutrients and biochar

An effective blend of worm castings, essential nutrients and biochar that is suitable for mixing directly in all types of soil.

  • Better growth rates from nutrient-rich formula
  • Permanently improved microbial life and soil aeration
  • Increased resilience to droughts and stressors
  • 100% organic, 100% peat-free
  • 4 L package size
Why it's different
  • Nutrients last longer: Biochar helps your soil hold onto nutrients and microbes that will slowly be released as your plants need them.
  • Less watering needed: Biochar holds 5x its weight in water keeping it available to your plants for longer.
  • Climate friendly: Biochar removes carbon from the atmosphere and we never use peat-moss, synthetic chemicals or other high-carbon footprint ingredients.
Application rates
  • Seedlings and young plants: Mix about a handful (100 ml) of the blend into the potting soil or planting hole. This will provide a nutrient boost and enhance the soil structure.
  • Established plants: Apply one or two handfuls (100-200 ml) of the blend as top dressing around the base of the plant. You can either apply about a half in layer on the soil surface, or mix it into the top few inches (5-10 cm) of the soil.
  • Container and indoor plants: Before planting mix the blend into your potting soil at about 10-20% by volume. If they are already planted, you can periodically apply the blend as top dressing to replenish nutrients and improve soil structure.
  • Over-seeding lawn: Spread about 1/4" of the blend (with plenty of seed!) onto the affected area of your lawn and then water generously and keep moist. One 4L package covers 16 ft² of lawn.

Made with
  • Organic vermicompost: Nutrient and microbe-rich worm castings sourced from a family farm in Quebec, Canada.
  • Activated biochar: High-quality biochar sourced from sustainable forestry residue in BC, Canada.
  • Blood meal (<1%): Organic and upcycled source of nitrogen.
  • Rock Phosphate (<1%): Natural source of phosphate for your soil.
  • Langbeinite (<1%): Naturally mined crystalline that supplies potassium and micronutrients.
  • Mycorrhizal fungi (<1%): Forms a root-like structure that helps absorb more nutrients and pass them on to plant roots.

Where to Use

Fruits and veggies

Boosts survival rate and growth rate of new gardens

Plant and flower beds

Prevents dry-out in areas with heavy sun

Indoor plants

Kind on the roots and improves soil quality for longer

Packed with nutrients and microbes

Our carefully formulated blend delivers a concentrated dose of nutrients and microbes to nourish your soil and help your plants thrive.

Holds onto nutrients and moisture longer

Biochar, our key ingredient, has an incredibly large surface area and a strong ability to attract nutrients and water. This helps create a slow-release blend that benefits your soil much longer than other soil amendments.

Organic and sustainable ingredients

Organic fertilizers are better for you soil’s health and for the planet. They promote natural microbial life, have a lower carbon footprint, and do not pollute our waters like nitrogen-based fertilizers do.

Why Common Ground

Peat-free

Natural peat bogs are one of Earth’s important carbon sinks—they should never be mined.

Synthetic-free

Synthetic fertilizers are responsible for up to 5% of human-caused greenhouse gases.

Carbon negative

Along with using low-carbon footprint ingredients, we remove additional CO₂ with every purchase.

FAQ

How much Nutrient Blend should I use?

Seedlings and young plants
Mix about a handful of the blend into the potting soil or planting hole. This will provide a nutrient boost and enhance the soil structure.

Established plants
Apply one or two handfuls of the blend as top dressing around the base of the plant. You can either apply about a half in layer on the soil surface, or mix it into the top few inches (5-10 cm) of the soil.

Container and indoor plants
Before planting you can mix the blend into your potting soil at about 10-20% by volume. If they are already planted, you can periodically apply the blend as top dressing to replenish nutrients and improve soil structure.

Over-seeding lawn
Spread about 1/4" of the blend (with plenty of seed!) onto the affected area of your lawn and then water generously and keep moist. One 4L package covers 16 ft² of lawn.

What makes the Nutrient Blend carbon negative?

Our Nutrient Blend contains biochar and the process of making biochar sequesters carbon by burning waste organic matter in a low-oxygen environment, which locks the carbon in a stable, storable form. This process, called pyrolysis, prevents the carbon from the organic matter from decomposing naturally and reentering the atmosphere.

This is a sustainable practice because only waste organic matter is used — organic matter that would otherwise have no purpose and would be left to decompose. Lastly, pyrolysis releases much less carbon dioxide into the air than would have entered the atmosphere from decomposition.

Why is peat bad for the environment?

Two main reasons:

  1. Carbon dioxide emissions: Peatlands store carbon dioxide (CO2). When peat is excavated, it decomposes and releases CO2 into the atmosphere, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.
  2. Loss of peatland habitats: Peat is extracted from peatlands, which are delicate ecosystems. Harvesting peat destroys these habitats, which are crucial for biodiversity.
